This safari combines gorilla trekking safari in the Democratic Republic on Congo, exclusive wildlife viewing tours in Akagera National Park and Nyungwe National Park.

Within the Democratic Republic of Congo, the mountain gorillas are found in Virunga National Park which is also a UNESCO Heritage site. This park is located in the eastern side of democratic Republic of Congo and boarders both Uganda and Rwanda. The park is home to over 200 gorilla individuals mostly situated in the southern part of the park. The Virunga National Park can also be accessed from south western Uganda at the border crossing area of Bunagana where you can be able to purchase a local visa for crossing.

Gorilla trekking in the Democratic Republic of Congo is not so perfect since the country was affected by war and conflicts, so travelers are advisable to check the situation before traveling to the country. The fighting in Virunga has greatly affected the number of gorillas due to habitant destruction and poaching. ABOUT AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

Akagera National Park is an amazing wildlife safari destination in Rwanda. It is located in the north east of Rwanda along the border with Tanzania. The forest fringed lakes, papyrus swamps, Savannah plains and rolling highlands combine to make Akagera amongst the most scenic of reserves anywhere in Africa. It has exceptional levels of biodiversity and forms the largest protected wetland in central Africa.

Notable plains game include elephant, buffalo, topi, zebra, waterbuck, roan antelope and eland. Other antelope are duiker, oribi, bohor reedbuck, klipspringer, bushbuck and impala. Of the primates, olive baboons, vervets and the secretive blue monkey are seen during the day, with bushbabies often seen on night drives.

Akagera is an important ornithological site with nearly 500 bird species, providing a fun-filled game viewing tour in Rwanda. Look out for the rare and elusive shoebill which shares the papyrus with other rarities such as the exquisite papyrus gonolek and countless other water birds that inhabit the wetlands in large numbers.

TRAVELER’S SAFETY IN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

Before booking a Tour to any province in the Eastern of the DRC, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND you contact your country's Foreign Affairs Ministry, or your country's consulate in the DRC for updated safety tips. We will continue to provide safety tips as we get them, but the above two institutions are best placed to give you the most accurate information.

Democratic Republic of Congo is safe for the travelers, al you have to do is book with a reputable tour company. The country has a high level of crime rate, crime increases at night so it’s not advisable to travel out of the hotel at night and that why we recommend that our guests have dinner by 6:00 pm.

In some cases, security authorities might target foreigners to solicit funds from them especially from the road blocks. There is also the arbitrary arrests of the foreign nationals by the security authorities and that’s why the travelers are advised to be respectful and courteous in all the interactions with the security personnel. Try to avoid coming close to military facilities. There have also been reports of criminals who use road blocks and pose as police or military men to rob the people who travel at night. Keep car locked and don't let anyone posing as a security officer enter your car. Always remember to carry color photocopies of the passport and other identity documents. Do not hand over original travel documents to security personnel as they may take advantage and extort money.

Different parts of the DRC are extremely insecure, however some parts of the country are safe. You can travel to these areas any time of the year. 01Day One: Arrival and pick up from Kigali International Airport

If your safari start at in Kigali, you will be welcomed by the tour guide from our company who will then offer you a city tour of Kigali and after drive to the north of Rwanda and arrive at Goma town in the afternoon, with your lunch at the lake water front beach hotel and later you will enjoy a city tour to visit the Goma city in case time allows. Dinner and overnight at Either Mikeno Lodge/ Bukima tented Camp. If your trip starts at Entebbe Airport in Uganda, our staff will meet you and you will start your trip through Mbarara, Kisoro, cross into Rwanda and spend a night in Gisenyi.

02Day Two: Gorilla trekking in the Virunga National Park

Wake up by 6:00 am and enjoy breakfast and then drive for 1 hour from the lodge to the park headquarters, from where you will be allocated a gorilla family which is available for gorilla trekking. The guests who will be staying at Bukima tented camp will not need to move a long distance since the lodge is near to the headquarters. These gorillas are easy to track in Virunga National Park and it’s the oldest park in Africa and also watch these primates for only 1 hour, you will watch them feed the young ones in the jungle forest. The trek can short and in some cases 1 or 2 hours can be opted in rough hiking. Dinner and overnight at Mikeno Lodge/ Bukima tented Camp

03Day Three: Transfer to Akagera National Park

You will wake up in the morning and have breakfast. You will after head to the border and complete the border crossing document and then cross to Rwanda and transfer to Akagera National Park

04Day Four: Akagera National Park Tour

We will leave at 6:00am and go for a morning game viewing drive in this African Savannah park. Akagera is big game country! Herds of elephant and buffalo emerge from the woodland to drink at the lakes; lucky visitors might stumble across a leopard, a spotted hyena, even a stray lion. Giraffe and zebra haunt the Savannah and more than a dozen types of antelope inhabit the park, most commonly the handsome chestnut-coated impala and the world's largest antelope, the statuesque Cape Eland. We will have lunch at Akagera Game Lodge. Alongside the picturesque lakes, pods of 50+ hippopotami grunt and splutter throughout the day, while outsized crocodiles soak up the sun with their vast jaws menacingly agape. And lining the lakes; some of the continent’s densest concentrations of water birds, amongst the parks over 500 recorded species. In the afternoon, we will exit with more game viewing en-route and drive back to Kigali for day off at the hotel.

05Day Five: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park

After breakfast, we will leave for Nyungwe National Park; arrive at Nyungwe Forest Lodge in time for lunch. Afternoon, we will take a relaxing walk to meet local farmers. This visit will give you first-hand experience with the locals. We will head back to the lodge for dinner. Overnight at Nyungwe Forest lodge (BLD)

06Day Six: Canopy Walks in Nyungwe

After an early breakfast, we will go for a thrilling adventure on the Nyungwe Canopy Walk. From the park information center, descend the 40º slant via a zig-zag foot path to the first tower deep in the forest valley for the 1½ hr walk on the Canopy Walk’s suspension bridge. The walk allows access to the upper parts of the forest, where one can see some unique ‘canopy’ species; apes, birds, butterflies, plants and insects, flowers, and other animals that live in the roof of the forest. It is an unforgettable experience. In the afternoon, enjoy a nature walk, birds watching. Overnight at Nyungwe Forest lodge (BLD)

07Day Seven: Departure

We drive you to the airport in time for your flight. If you have other activities planned, let us know and we will have a car and driver ready to take you to the airport on the date of your flight. Or, let's continue the Rwanda Adventure
